Introduction One of the foci of student development in a university is the development of student character. Commendable character and positive life attitude are some of the attributes being developed in the process of learning of each student to become a single entity.
Ma Chung University in Malang, East Java, Indonesia as an institution is committed to educate students to be academically competent as well as morally excellent in line with Ma Chung University Values. The commitment led to the establishment of the Character Building Development Center or CBDC (Rector Decree no. 00393/MACHUNG/SK-REK/XI/2007, dated November 7, 2007). The main goal of the center is to develop students’ character based on Ma Chung University Twelve Values until the students graduate. The CBDC developed five programs as follows: 1. Character Building Program 1: Relation with oneself 2. Character Building Program 2: Relation with God 3. Character Building Program 3: Relation with fellow human beings 4. Character Building Program 4: Relation with the world and nature 5. Character Building Program 5: Development and incorporation of Ma Chung Twelve Values. The programs are conducted using different modes, such as seminars, lectures, and mentoring based on the students’ needs. Mentoring is a system where people with a lot of experience, knowledge, etc. advise and help other people at work or young people preparing for work (Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, 2004: 1031). Mentoring is based on the learning relationship between mentors and mentees, on the assumption that mentors are more experienced in life than mentees. Mentors consist of faculty and staff members who will be dealing with their mentees for eight semesters. Each group of approximately 15 students meet regularly in or outside the classroom to discuss a given topic. Each student is encouraged to put forward his or her opinions and share their knowledge and life experiences. 1. Character Building Program 1 – Relation with oneself.The objective of this program is to make students know themselves holistically, that is they should know their own strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats, and they need to make their own visions, missions and personal objectives Character Building Program 1 curriculum - Rules of The Game
Rules of the Game for this program are: - CBDP1 is a prerequisite for Character Building Program 2 - Full attendance - No violation of dress code, and - Writing an article on oneself.
- Pre-interview
- Pre-interview is conducted to know students’ personal data, family, and all activities concerning themselves.
- Vision, mission, and goals
- Discussing the meaning of vision and mission according to students - Defining personal vision, mission, and goals of students’ life - Practicing one’s dreams
- Healthy self-image
- Teaching students awareness, ability, and will to create healthy and positive self-image so they can appreciate themselves and have self-identity. In addition, they should maximize their own best potentials
- The Journey into Self-Awareness
- The Journey into Self-Awareness is intended to teach students to understand their own character more profoundly. The instruments used to analyze their own personality are the Johari Window, SWOT analysis, future plans, the Multiple Intelligence Test (Howard Gardner Model). In addition, the following items are also conducted: - Teaching the power of self-management - Teaching the principles of self-management - Holding a seminar on self-management - The Story of My Life

2. Character Building Program 2: Relation with GodThe objective of this program is to make the students individual entities in their relation with God, religiously tolerant, and to prioritize internalization of their understanding of God and real faith practice. Character Building Program 3: Relation with fellow human beingsThe objective of this program is to educate the students so that they are proud of their own identity as Indonesians, willing to get along well with other Indonesians of different backgrounds, abiding laws, and incorporate Pancasila values in social life. 4. Character Building Program 4 – Relation with the World and Nature The objectives of this program are to enable students to adapt themselves to different situations, to be professional in attitude, to be dedicated to work, to master technology, to be able to apply technology to improve life, and to live peacefully with nature – to become natural environmentalists for continuous life.
